Their name comes from an idea original guitarist Terry Corso had about aliens and the earth: \"I was daydreaming at my dull desk job with my feet up, and I thought to myself, 'Wouldn't it be cool if the human species were placed on earth and cultivated by alien intelligence?' Maybe the aliens added us to an atmosphere that was suitable for us, and they've been watching us develop and colonize, kind of like what a kid does with an ant farm.\" The band has sold over 5 million units worldwide, and has four studio albums, and eight music videos.\n\nThe band included Dryden Mitchell (vocalist), Terry Corso (guitarist), Tye Zamora (bassist), and Mike Cosgrove (drummer). They played their first show on Mitchell's 20th Birthday and released their $100 EP that year. In 1998 they released their Love Songs EP.\n\nIn 1999, Alien Ant Farm released their underground debut album, titled Greatest Hits. It went on to win Best Independent Album in the L.A. Sie wurde 1995 in Riverside (Kalifornien) gegründet.\n1996 nahmen Alien Ant Farm ihre erste Demo auf, die 100$ E.P., zwei Jahre später (1998) folgt mit Love Songs eine weitere Demo. Sie tingelten drei Jahre durch Clubs, bevor sie dann ihr LP-Debüt Greatest Hits aufnahmen, welches 1999 zum besten Independent-Album gekürt wird.\n\nEine tiefe Freundschaft verbindet Alien Ant Farm mit der Alternative-Rock-Band Papa Roach, beide Bands machen gegenseitig Werbung füreinander auf ihren Auftritten. Alien Ant Farm waren dann auch das erste Signing des Papa Roach-Labels New Noize. Papa Roach Frontmann Coby Dick brachte sie bei Dreamworks/Universal unter, wo 2001 mit ANThology ihr erstes Majorlabel-Album erschien, das Platz 11 der US-Charts erreichte. Den großen Durchbruch schafften sie mit ihrem Cover von Michael Jacksons Smooth Criminal, mit dem sie bis auf Platz 3 der UK-Single-Charts vorstießen. Mit der Nachfolge-Single Movies erreichten sie dann den fünften Platz.\n\nIm Jahre 2005 nahm die Band, die sich inzwischen von Terry Corso getrennt hatte (neuer Gitarrist ist Joe Hill), ein neues Album mit dem Namen 3rd Draft auf. Dieses wurde allerdings vorerst nicht veröffentlicht, da es Differenzen mit dem Plattenlabel Geffen Records gab.
